As the development of electric vehicles accelerates, SAIC-GM-Wuling continues to advance its own technology. In 2024, the globally popular Wuling Xingguang and Wuling Xingguang S were both equipped with the independently developed Shenlian Battery and Lingxi Hybrid Technology.
The Shenlian Battery represents a significant innovation by SAIC-GM-Wuling in the field of electric vehicles. Since the battery is the core of new energy vehicles, let’s take a closer look at some environmental tests conducted on the Shenlian Battery.
1. Battery Immersion Test
Many people worry about driving an electric vehicle in rainy weather, especially in countries with frequent heavy rainfall. In extreme downpours, if the battery is submerged in water, will the battery pack experience water ingress or leakage?
According to national standards, battery packs are immersed in water for 30 minutes during testing. However, the Shenlian Battery was subjected to an even more rigorous test, challenging it with a 2-hour immersion.
The Shenlian Battery was immersed in a one-meter-deep water tank for over two hours. No air bubbles were observed rising to the surface, and the water remained clear, with no signs of electrolyte leakage.
After removing the battery from the water, the electrical connectors were found to be dry, indicating that the sealing at the interfaces was intact. Once the surface water was wiped off and the SMC material panel was disassembled, the interior of the battery was completely dry and undamaged. Additionally, there was no evidence of water ingress into the electrical control systems, and the battery functioned normally throughout.
2. Battery High-Temperature Thermal Runaway Test
The Wuling Shenlian Battery cells meet standards far exceeding national requirements in terms of strictness. For example:
- When pierced with a steel needle, the Shenlian Battery cell did not catch fire.
- Even with the steel needle remaining inserted for 2 hours, the battery cell maintained a state of no fire or explosion.
- Furthermore, when the steel needle was inserted to one-third of the battery cell’s depth and left for 2 hours, the Shenlian Battery cell continued to operate normally in its charge-discharge cycles.
3. Battery Compression Test
In this test, the Shenlian Battery was subjected to a force of 100 kN for a duration of 10 minutes. After the 10-minute test, observers noted that while the side frame experienced some deformation, the main structural beams remained largely unchanged.
Additionally, there was no change in the battery’s temperature throughout the test. To put it into perspective, a force of 100 kN is roughly equivalent to the impact of several tons of pressure being exerted during the compression test.
In this test, the Wuling Shenlian Battery demonstrated outstanding performance. Similarly, in the 2024 winter test results for new energy vehicles, the Wuling Xingguang, equipped with the Shenlian Battery and Lingxi Hybrid Technology, excelled as well. It ranked among the top three in the hybrid power endurance category for tests conducted at temperatures ranging from -20°C to -15°C.
The Wuling Shenlian Battery, with its exceptional performance, provides a robust safety guarantee for Wuling electric vehicles and ensures reliable travel for those driving them. In the future, SAIC-GM-Wuling will continue to refine its technology, safeguarding the safety of our journeys and advancing the future of mobility.
